The Garden of Earthly Delights, 1503-1504, Hieronymous Bosch

Hieronymous Bosch produced some of the most inventive as well as intense fantasy paintings that have ever existed. His nightmarish vision echoes the dark and Gothic character of the late Middle Ages. ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights ’, is the most fantastic painting I have ever had the pleasure to view. There are so many details throughout the painting that each time I look at it I am drawn to something new.
The triptych depicts the history of the world according to the Bible as well as the progression of sin. On the left outside panel the story starts with Adam and Eve highlighting original sin. This starts with Eve who tempted Adam. It was often believed in that time that women were an instrument of evil unable to control there lust. (Hmm not sure about that) That Eve’s acceptance of the apple meant that women did not have the power to resist temptation.
If you look in the far corner of the left panel of Paradise you see a black pond of mucky water in which various bizarre looking creatures crawl out of. This seems to predict the coming of sin and hints at the future torments of Hell which are displayed on the further right panel.
The central panel illustrates an erotic world filled with exotic and sinful pleasures. Scandalous nudes partake in decadent lusts and pleasures. We see men and women frolicking amongst the garden and indulging in its fruits. The fruits are representative as symbols for carnal pleasure. The garden itself is symbolic as gardens are traditionally depicted as settings in which lovers entice and woo each other.
What I find interesting is when you look at the central lake of the image you see that it contains only women, while men ride on animals around it. The men riding on animals are symbolic because animals symbolised the basic urges/appetite of mankind. The act of riding was a metaphor for sexual activity. This could further represent how it was thought that women took the lead of sin during those times. Or perhaps it could reveal men’s reaction and lack of ability to control them selves around the female sex.
What I find fascinating about this painting is I am not sure if Bosch is in fact entirely condemning lust. With all his imagination to paint such a graphic image representing the pleasures of flesh, perhaps he was in awe of sexuality.
The far right panel depicts Hell filled with various torments and creatures which are made up of humans, animals and machines. The entire image is chaotic and filled with destruction and pain. If you look at the painting you can find scenes representing the deadly sins such as gambling and vanity, The most effective scene in this image I feel are the musicians shown being tortured. You could almost imagine the screeching sound of the instruments filling Hell while the condemned are being punished. I certainly wouldn’t want to be there.
This is a painting that I believe that I will never grow tired of, there is so much going on through out the entire painting and Bosch’s technique in creating such detail is exceptional.
